Bilaspur doctors rely on mobile flash lights during power cut

Bilaspur | Correspondent: In a concerning situation, doctors at the government hospital in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, are performing surgeries using mobile phone flashlights due to frequent power cuts and a lack of diesel to run the hospital’s backup generators. This problem arises because, when the power goes out, the hospital doesn’t have enough diesel to operate the generators.

As a result, doctors keep their mobile phones nearby to light the operating room during these outages.

The issue was highlighted again recently, leading District Collector Avnish Sharan to request a detailed report on the situation.

This is not the first time the hospital has faced criticism.

The Chhattisgarh High Court had earlier warned the district collector about the hospital’s poor condition.

The Chief Justice had even questioned the usefulness of such a hospital.

Despite this, the hospital’s problems continue.

Serving many patients from nearby districts, the hospital still struggles with basic infrastructure.

Even though it has eight generators, covering both the district hospital and the attached Mother and Child Hospital, these are rarely used due to the lack of diesel.

Diesel is only ordered after the power goes out.

On Monday, during another power cut, the doctors were forced to rely on mobile phone lights to finish a surgery, as there was no diesel to power the generators

Doctors say this happens frequently and, despite multiple complaints, no lasting solution has been provided.

Following this latest incident, District Collector Avnish Sharan has asked the civil surgeon to submit a report on the ongoing problem.
