Women Gherao Minister Ramvichar Netam’s Convoy in Balrampur

Ambikapur | Correspondent: A group of women surrounded the convoy of Chhattisgarh Cabinet Minister Ramvichar Netam in Balrampur district, protesting over unresolved village issues, a lack of basic infrastructure and what they alleged was the indifference of public representatives towards their demands.

The confrontation took place after an official programme, as the minister’s convoy was preparing to leave. The women stopped the vehicle and raised slogans against the government and local administration, expressing their frustration over pending development work and the absence of essential facilities in their village.

According to local residents, the women had approached the minister to seek action on several issues, including the construction of a panchayat building in Girdarganj village. However, they alleged that their demands did not receive any assurance, prompting them to confront the minister publicly.

Women Demand Panchayat Building, Question Government’s Response

The demand for a dedicated panchayat building was among the main issues raised during the protest. Girdarganj reportedly does not have its own panchayat building, creating difficulties for village-level administrative activities.

According to villagers, the women were accompanied by sarpanch Sanskriti Raxel when they approached Netam with their demands. Along with the panchayat building, they also sought attention to other local problems and development requirements.

The residents alleged that the minister did not provide any assurance regarding their demands. Frustrated by what they perceived as a lack of response, the women decided to make their displeasure known as his convoy prepared to depart.

They also criticised the gap between election-time promises and the action taken after elections, alleging that local communities are often left waiting for solutions to their problems.

Protesters Surround Minister’s Vehicle, Raise Slogans

The situation became tense after the convoy stopped. The women gathered around the minister’s car, stood close to its windows and directly voiced their grievances.

They raised slogans against the government and local administration, criticising what they described as the neglect of village-level concerns. Their protest focused on the need for basic infrastructure, the completion of pending development work and a more responsive approach from elected representatives.

The incident brought the village’s demand for a panchayat building into the spotlight. However, an official statement from the minister or the district administration responding to the allegations was not available in the account of the incident.

Earlier Discontent Among BJP Workers in Durg-Bhilai

The Balrampur confrontation follows a separate reported episode in Durg-Bhilai, where BJP workers had also expressed displeasure over Netam’s conduct during a visit.

According to reports about that incident, the minister visited the farmhouse of a Congress MLA and reportedly stayed there for one to two hours. He subsequently announced development projects worth more than Rs 1 crore.

Meanwhile, BJP workers who had been preparing to meet the minister were reportedly waiting for an opportunity to interact with him. They were upset when, according to the account, Netam did not meet them during the visit.

The incident prompted criticism from party workers, who questioned the approach of their leaders and expressed disappointment over being unable to meet the minister despite making preparations for his visit. There were also reports that the matter had reached the party organisation, although no further details about any action taken were available.

Focus on Accountability and Public Engagement

The two incidents involve different circumstances- the Balrampur protest centred on local infrastructure and civic demands, while the Durg-Bhilai episode reportedly concerned dissatisfaction among BJP workers.

In Balrampur, the immediate issue was the demand for a panchayat building in Girdarganj, along with other village-level concerns. The women’s confrontation with the minister’s convoy reflected their frustration over what they alleged was a lack of attention to these demands.

Whether the minister or the local administration will respond to the villagers’ concerns remains to be seen. For now, the incident has drawn attention to the need for effective communication between public representatives and residents seeking solutions to basic infrastructure and development issues.
