Racism against Northeast students sparks concern in RS
Racism row in Parliament
New Delhi | Desk: Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan expressed deep concern over the rising incidents of racial discrimination against students from Northeast India. During the 'Zero Hour' in the House, BJP MP from Arunachal Pradesh, Nabam Rebia, raised the issue of the harassment faced by three female students in Delhi's Malviya Nagar; responding to this, the Chairman stated that the entire House stood in solidarity with him in this concern.
Citing the 2014 Nido Tania case and the recent murder of Angel Chakma a student from Tripura in Dehradun, Nabam Rebia asserted that the youth of the Northeast are being repeatedly targeted.
Expressing indignation over the Malviya Nagar incident, he stated that making racist remarks against female students preparing for the UPSC examinations, and harboring misconceptions regarding their activities, is reprehensible.
The MP demanded that the Central Government enact stringent laws to curb such crimes, ensure time-bound trials for these cases in the courts, and incorporate the history and culture of the Northeast into the NCERT and CBSE curricula. Additionally, he suggested conducting special recruitment drives specifically for the youth of the Northeast.
