One-year-old Elephant calf dies in Raigarh forest

Raigarh | Correspondent: A one-year-old elephant calf died after getting trapped between rocks in the Gharghoda forest range under the Dharamjaigarh forest division of Raigarh district in Chhattisgarh. According to forest department officials, a female elephant was roaming in the area with her two calves.

It is suspected that while climbing a hill, the calf slipped on the slope and fell into a deep crevice between two large rocks, unable to free itself.

On Wednesday morning, when villagers spotted the calf's body, they informed the forest department. The most poignant aspect of this incident was that the mother elephant, distraught over the death of her calf, stood beside it all night, her cries echoing throughout the area.

Due to the difficult terrain and poor network connectivity, the forest department team faced considerable difficulty in reaching the spot.

Gharghoda Sub-Divisional Officer Ashutosh Mandwa said that the calf's body has been recovered from between the rocks, and preliminary investigations suggest that the cause of death was internal injuries and excessive bleeding sustained from the fall. (Symbolic Photo)
