Newborn dies at Surguja CHC after Sweeper attempts delivery, probe ordered

Ambikapur | Correspondent: Due to the absence of doctors and nurses at the Kunni Community Health Center in the Lakhanpur development block of Chhattisgarh's Surguja district, a sweeper attempted to deliver a baby. The newborn died during the operation, prompting the victim's family to level serious allegations of negligence against the hospital management.

The family alleges that if a doctor or nurse had been available on time, their baby's life could have been saved.

According to information, Gauri Yadav, a resident of Jamdara village, was brought to the hospital around 11 p.m. on February 16th when she experienced labor pains. It is alleged that no responsible medical personnel were present at the time, following which hospital sweeper Shyam Pati admitted the woman and began an examination.

At around 7 a.m. on February 18th, when the sweeper attempted to deliver the baby herself, the baby became stuck. Although doctors arrived at the scene and attempted to manage the situation, it was too late and the newborn died.

Chief Medical and Health Officer P.S. Marco confirmed the incident, stating that it was a case of breech presentation (the baby being in the opposite direction), which is quite complicated.

He admitted that the nurse on duty at the time of the incident was absent from work, while the other two nurses were on medical leave.

Given the seriousness of the matter, the Block Medical Officer has been instructed to investigate. The administration has clarified that strict action will be taken against those found negligent in their duties after the investigation report is received.
