New Delhi | Desk: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Canada for the upcoming G7 summit has sparked two contrasting narratives. On one hand, the visit is being hailed as a crucial opportunity to mend fractured ties between India and Canada. On the other, it is facing staunch opposition from the Sikh community in Canada.

Newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has extended a personal invitation to Prime Minister Modi to attend the summit in Alberta, despite India not being a formal member of the G7. This marks Modi’s first visit to Canada in a decade and is being seen as a significant diplomatic test for Carney.

The meeting is expected to serve as a potential "reset" in India-Canada relations or possibly chart a new course for bilateral engagement.

Tensions between the two countries reached a boiling point in 2023 when then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement in the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

India had strongly denied the allegations, calling them absurd, and counter-accused Canada of harboring Sikh extremists. The fallout led to reciprocal diplomatic expulsions.

With Carney now at the helm, hopes for a thaw in relations have risen. According to India's Ministry of External Affairs, the visit provides a significant opportunity to exchange views on bilateral and global issues and explore pathways to restore normalcy in diplomatic ties.

From an economic perspective, the Canadian government views this visit as strategically important. Prime Minister Carney sees India as the world's fifth-largest economy and a key player in global supply chains.

Analysts consider Carney’s outreach as a pragmatic, interest-driven decision. The two nations share strong trade and people-to-people ties: in 2023, bilateral trade stood at approximately $9 billion, and Canadian pension funds have invested nearly $55 billion in India. Moreover, Canada's Indian diaspora, nearly 2 million strong, offers a solid foundation for strengthening ties.

However, the diplomatic overture is overshadowed by intense resentment within Canada's Sikh community. Many hold the Indian government responsible for Nijjar’s killing and ongoing threats to other Sikh activists.

Prominent figures like activist Moninder Singh have reportedly been advised by police to relocate for safety reasons. Singh has described the invitation to Modi as "an insult" and a signal that “Sikh lives matter less than trade with the world’s fifth-largest economy.”

The community has planned protests in Ottawa during Modi’s visit. Critics accuse Carney of prioritizing economic interests over human rights.

While Modi has expressed willingness to engage in “law enforcement dialogue,” it remains to be seen whether this visit can thaw tensions over the unresolved Nijjar investigation and sensitive issues like the Khalistan movement.
