Man kills friend, surrenders claiming ‘Ghost’ Haunted him
Murder confessed in Fear
Ambikapur | Correspondent: A bizarre and gruesome incident has come to light in Chhattisgarh's Surguja district, where a confluence of superstition and crime has left even the police baffled. In Bhagwanpur, located within the Gandhinagar police station limits, a man murdered his own friend and buried the body inside his home.
However, just a few days after the murder, the accused himself arrived at the police station, claiming that the deceased's ghost was haunting him-a revelation that led the police to recover the mutilated corpse from inside the house.
According to the police, the incident occurred on the intervening night of March 24 and 25. The accused, Mithlesh Kujur (37), was visited by his friend, Brijlal Agariya (35), who arrived intoxicated and insisted on drinking alcohol together. As it was the period of Navratri, Mithlesh refused, leading to a heated argument between the two.
During the altercation, Brijlal smashed Mithlesh's mobile phone; enraged by this act, Mithlesh beat him to death using a stick. To conceal the evidence, Mithlesh, aided by his wife Rajkumari, dug a pit inside their home, buried the body, and covered it with plywood and soil.
Following the crime, the accused couple fled the scene; however, Mithlesh soon began to experience severe psychological distress. He told the police that he was constantly seeing the apparition of his friend, who was demanding that his last rites be performed.
Driven by this 'ghostly' fear and remorse, he went to the police station on Tuesday night and surrendered himself. On Wednesday, in the presence of a forensic team, the police excavated the site within the house and recovered the body.
City Superintendent of Police Rahul Bansal stated that while the accused attributes his actions to a ghostly presence, the police view it as a manifestation of immense psychological pressure and a guilty conscience. Currently, the police have arrested the accused couple, husband and wife, and have registered a case against them under relevant sections of murder and the concealment of evidence.
