New Delhi | Desk: The high content of ethanol (ethyl alcohol) in hand sanitizers has become a cause for concern. The European Chemicals Agency (ECA) claims that excessive exposure to ethanol can increase the risk of skin diseases, and this chemical can also increase the risk of cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also warned against the use of sanitizers with high ethanol content.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for hand sanitizers surged, and this trend continues. Many people rely more on sanitizers than soap and water. However, these hand sanitizers typically contain three types of chemicals: ethanol (ethyl alcohol), isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol), or benzalkonium chloride. These three chemicals dissolve easily in water, making them preferred in sanitizers. However, in recent times, the use of ethanol has increased compared to benzalkonium chloride.

According to the WHO, ethanol is used for many purposes, including in industrial factories and in hand sanitizers. This explains the potential harm this chemical can cause when exposed to excessive skin contact.

Formation of the Carcinogenic Acetaldehyde

A paper published in the international scientific journal Clinical Microbiology Reviews states that any mixture containing at least 30% alcohol can be germicidal. The higher the alcohol concentration, the more effective the mixture. However, if the alcohol concentration exceeds 60%, while it can effectively kill germs, it can also be harmful to the body.

According to researchers, when ethanol enters the human body, it can undergo chemical reactions to form acetaldehyde, which is considered a carcinogen. Therefore, researchers are recommending washing hands with antiseptic soap and water instead of ethanol-based sanitizers.
