Elephant dies after train hit
Female elephant killed on rail track
Raigarh | Correspondent: A 40-year-old female elephant died after being hit by a coal-laden goods train while crossing a railway track in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district on Monday night.
According to forest officials, the incident occurred around 10 pm when a herd of elephants was crossing the railway line. During the crossing, one of the female elephants was struck by a goods train traveling from Kharsia towards Dharamjaigarh.
The elephant suffered severe injuries to her hindquarters. After receiving information about the incident, the forest department rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. However, the elephant succumbed to her injuries while being transported for treatment, officials said.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) PM Arvind stated that the Forest Department has initiated necessary legal proceedings following the incident, and the process of conducting an inquest (panchnama) on the carcass is underway. Furthermore, given the presence of other elephant herds in the area, villagers have been strictly instructed to avoid entering the forest and to maintain a safe distance from them.
