Ahead of Bangladesh polls, new minority party unveils electoral strategy

Dhaka | Desk: Political activity has intensified in Bangladesh ahead of the general elections scheduled for February. Amidst increasing attacks on Hindus and other minority communities, a newly formed political party, the Bangladesh Minority Janata Party (BMJP), has devised a strategy to consolidate minority votes.

The party, formed in April, plans to field candidates in 91 of the country's 300 parliamentary constituencies, aiming to win at least 40 to 45 seats.

BMJP President Sukriti Kumar Mandal clarified that the party has selected constituencies where the minority population, particularly Hindus, ranges from 20% to 60%.

He stated that the security of minorities is the top priority in the current circumstances. To ensure security, the party is exploring the possibility of forming alliances with major parties like Tarique Rahman's BNP or Jamaat-e-Islami, so that voters can cast their ballots without fear.

Mandal emphasized that his party is the voice of persecuted Hindus and that they are not in favor of any alliance with the Awami League.

The party has presented its vision for building a secular Bangladesh through a five-point program. This includes crucial issues such as dividing the country into five provinces and implementing a federal system, guaranteeing fundamental rights constitutionally, and promoting a scientific and secular approach in the education system.

Furthermore, the BMJP has urged India to change its policy. Sukriti Mandal believes that if India supports the Hindu community and genuine representatives like the BMJP instead of the Awami League, it will increase the influence of minorities in mainstream Bangladeshi politics and improve bilateral relations.
