Chhattisgarh seeks ₹10,133 crore from MP over pension dues

Bhopal | Desk: More than 25 years have passed since Chhattisgarh became the state of Madhya Pradesh, but now a new financial dispute has heated up between the two states over the "separation money" of the division. The BJP government in Chhattisgarh has demanded ₹10,133 crore from the Madhya Pradesh government as outstanding funds.

This issue came to light during the budget session of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly on February 27, when Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Jagdish Deora submitted a written reply to an opposition leader's question. The government informed the House that the Chhattisgarh government had submitted an official letter dated August 1, 2025, claiming this amount.

This entire dispute concerns the pension liabilities of government employees who opted for Chhattisgarh at the time of the state's division in 2000 and retired from there.

Under Section 49 of the Madhya Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2000, pension liabilities were divided between the two states in the population ratio (48,566: 17,615).

The Chhattisgarh government states that after auditing and re-verifying pension payments, it was found that Madhya Pradesh has an outstanding liability of ₹10,133 crore. To resolve this serious issue, a joint working group of officials from both states was formed on November 28, 2025, and is currently studying the claim.
