Ex-Woman Cop held in Durg jewellery scam

Durg | Correspondent: In the Mohan Nagar police station area of Durg, Chhattisgarh, a female head constable, Monica Gupta (alias Monica Soni), has been arrested and sent to jail on charges of misappropriation and embezzlement of stolen goods.

The entire case relates to a burglary that occurred in 2022 at the home of Sonal Dwivedi, a resident of Scindia Nagar. At that time, an unknown thief stole approximately 79 grams of gold jewelry and cash. In June 2023, the then-investigating officer, Monica Gupta, apprehended the accused and recovered jewelry worth approximately 2.5 lakh rupees, but instead of demonstrating honesty, she chose the path of greed.

Surprisingly, Monica misled higher officials by reporting that the recovered jewelry was safe in the police station's storehouse, when in reality, she had kept the jewelry with herself instead of depositing it in government records.

When the department became aware of this fraud and initiated an internal investigation, the constable's secret was revealed. An FIR was filed against her in March 2025 for failing to respond to the department's requests for clarification and for failing to return the jewelry.

After remaining absconding for a long time, the police finally apprehended her on February 2, 2026. It's worth noting that Monica Gupta has a tainted past record. She has previously been convicted of fraudulently promising jobs at the Cantonment Police Station. She had already been dismissed from service for this shameful act, and now, after the court rejected her bail application, she has been sent back behind bars.
