CIMS introduces ‘Green Anesthesia’ for safer surgeries
CIMS goes eco-friendly
Bilaspur | Correspondent: Taking a revolutionary step in Chhattisgarh's medical sector, the Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS), Bilaspur, has introduced 'Green Anesthesia.' The primary objective of this unique initiative is to provide safe healthcare services to patients while simultaneously protecting both the environment and medical professionals from the adverse effects of hazardous gases.
In fact, gases such as Desflurane and Nitrous Oxide commonly used during surgeries are potent greenhouse gases; their environmental impact is several times greater than that of Carbon Dioxide. These gases not only deplete the ozone layer but also contribute significantly to global warming.
The new methodology being adopted by CIMS emphasizes the TIVA (Total Intravenous Anesthesia) technique, wherein medications are administered directly into the bloodstream via an intravenous (IV) line. This approach leads to a substantial reduction in the emission of harmful gases.
Under this technique, drugs such as Propofol and Midazolam are administered intravenously (via the bloodstream), a method considered to be highly effective and safe.
Furthermore, the institute is utilizing 'Low Flow Anesthesia' and modern leakage-control equipment; these measures minimize gas consumption, thereby rendering medical treatment both cost-effective and safer.
This initiative will also prove to be a boon for anesthesiologists who spend 10 to 12 hours daily in the operating theater and face health risks due to constant exposure to these gases. This visionary approach by CIMS will not only make healthcare services more sustainable but will also set a new benchmark for other medical institutions in the future.
