Wedding halted as minor girl rescued from child marriage
Minor saved in Raipur
Raipur | Correspondent: On the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, the vigilance of the District Administration and the Police Department successfully saved a minor girl from being bound in marriage prematurely. Upon receiving information regarding the marriage of a 16-year-old girl in an urban area, a joint team comprising the Department of Women and Child Development, the Police, and the Child Helpline rushed to the spot and took immediate action.
By the time the team arrived, the wedding preparations had been completed, and arrangements for the procession's departure were already underway.
Officials intervened to halt the marriage and then verified the age-related documents.
Upon verification, the girl's age was determined to be 16 years, 5 months, and 13 days, which falls below the legally mandated minimum age of 18 years.
During this operation, the family members were apprised of the adverse consequences of child marriage as well as the relevant legal provisions.
A written undertaking was also obtained from the family, pledging that the marriage would not be solemnized before the girl attains the age of 18. The administration has unequivocally clarified that child marriage is not merely a social evil, but also a punishable offense. Citizens are urged to immediately report any such information to the Child Helpline at 1098. (File Photo)
