Gevra to become world’s largest coal mine

Bilaspur | Correspondent: The Gevra mine, operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India, will become the world's largest mine next year. SECL CMD Harish Duhan confirmed that the mine will achieve its target of 63 million tons of annual coal production, surpassing the US's Black Thunder mine (61-62 million tons) and becoming the world's largest coal mine.

Currently recognized as India's largest opencast mine, Gevra has already received environmental clearance to expand its capacity to 70 million tons annually. This fiscal year, the company has set a target of 56 million tons of production, which is fully prepared with sufficient land, modern machinery, manpower, and the robust infrastructure of Indian Railways.

In addition to coal production, the company is also diversifying its business, including a 700 MW solar power project, gasification projects, and collaboration with the Chhattisgarh government on critical minerals and floating solar.

In addition, SECL is working with scientific agencies on technology to extract rare earth elements from mine tailings. To accelerate future plans, the company aims to launch an IPO and list on the stock exchange by March 2027.
