Fear of SIR process triggers suicide attempt in Hooghly

Kolkata | Desk: Fear and anxiety over the "Special Intensive Revision" process has led to another suicide attempt in West Bengal. A housewife in the Kananadi area of the Somaspur-2 Gram Panchayat in the Dhanekhali police station area of Hooghly district attempted suicide by drinking pesticide along with her six-year-old daughter.

Currently, both mother and daughter are undergoing treatment at the PG Hospital in Kolkata. Sources indicate that both are in critical condition and fighting for their lives.

According to local and police sources, Asha Soren was married in Haripal eight years ago, but has been living at her parents' home for the past five to six years due to family disputes.

Recently, booth-level officers were distributing SIR forms in the area. Other family members at Asha's parents' home received the forms, but 27-year-old Asha did not receive one.

Unable to receive the form and without the necessary documents at her parents' home, Asha was mentally devastated and felt that she would be unable to receive any help related to the SIR due to her loss of contact with her in-laws. This deep mental depression and fear of the SIR led her to take this suicidal step.

Upon learning of the incident, both were taken to Dhanekhali Rural Hospital, where, after receiving first aid, they were referred to PG Hospital in Kolkata.

Meanwhile, local MLA Asima Patra, upon hearing the news, visited Asha's home in the Somaspur area of Dhanekhali today to meet her family.
