Elephant movement shifts to Dharamjaigarh, villages on high alert
Night movement of elephants triggers village alert
Raigarh | Correspondent: The epicenter of elephant movement in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district has undergone a complete shift. According to the latest statistics, out of the total 117 elephants present in the district, a staggering 113 have congregated within the Dharamjaigarh Forest Division alone.
This massive concentration of elephants has heightened concerns for both the Forest Department and local villagers. Currently, the forests of Dharamjaigarh harbor 30 male elephants, 55 females, and 28 calves, with the largest herd active in the Amgaon area.
Lately, the elephants appear to have established a specific "route chart" of their own. Driven by the effects of the summer heat, elephant herds are emerging from the forests at dusk and heading toward residential areas and agricultural fields.
On Tuesday night, the elephants unleashed significant havoc, completely destroying the paddy and groundnut crops of approximately 12 farmers across the Medharmar, Sherband, Chainpur, and Chhal regions.
The Forest Department team is now keeping a vigilant watch on every movement of the elephants, utilizing drone cameras and specialized "Elephant Mitra" (Elephant-Friendly) squads. The department has issued strict advisories to villagers, urging them to refrain from venturing into the forests at night and to remain alert in order to prevent any loss of human life.
