Violence in Bangladesh over reservation continues

New Delhi | Desk: The ongoing violence in Bangladesh demanding the abolition of reservation shows no signs of stopping.

Over 35 people have died, leading to a nationwide curfew.

In addition, mobile and internet services have been shut down.

The Indian government has advised Indian students in Bangladesh to stay indoors and not leave their homes.

Bangladesh has a provision for one-third reservation in government jobs for families of freedom fighters from the 1971 independence war against Pakistan, known as ‘war heroes.’

On June 5, the High Court declared the government’s 2018 notification canceling reservation in government jobs as illegal.

This court decision sparked the current anti-reservation movement, with students and youth protesting nationwide.

Following an attack on a prison in Narsingdi on Friday, where hundreds of prisoners were freed, the Prime Minister’s Office announced a nationwide curfew.

The government has stated that the army will be deployed to restore law and order.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has issued an advisory for Indian students in Bangladesh, urging them not to travel and to stay indoors.

The Indian High Commission has also provided emergency contact numbers for students in need of assistance.
