Keir Starmer set to be Britain’s new PM, Sunak faces defeat

London | Desk: Labour Party makes a triumphant return to Britain after 14 years, while Indian-origin Rishi Sunak’s Conservative party has suffered a significant defeat.

It is now certain that Keir Starmer will lead the Labour Party to form the new government.

According to BBC, Labour party has surpassed the 326 seats required to form a government. Labour party led by Keir Starmer heading to victory reminiscent of 1997.

So far Starmer’s leading party has secured 410 seats, Whereas Conservative party led by Rishi Sunak has secure 118 seats.

Keir Starmer, who replaced Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader in 2020, is set to become the new Prime Minister of Britain.

In a short speech delivered in front of a waiting press pack, Sunak apologised to the country after the Tories’ worst electoral performance in modern times. “I take responsibility for this loss,” he said

Sunak touted the achievements of the Conservatives during 14 years of governance, saying the UK was “more prosperous, fairer and resilient than in 2010”

The outgoing PM also paid tribute to his rival Sir Keir Starmer, who will soon take his place in Downing Street, saying he was a “decent, public-spirited man”. He said Starmer’s successes would be shared by the country.

Earlier, in an impassioned victory speech, the Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer promised “national renewal” and vowed that he would put “country first, party second”.

“We have earned the mandate to relight the fire,” Sir Keir told jubilant Labour activists in London. “Our task is nothing less than renewing the ideas that hold this country together.”
