Kenya government cancels deal with Adani group
New Delhi | Desk: Kenyan President William Ruto has cancelled the controversial deal with the Adani group, following the corruption allegations in the US.
Ruto has ordered that India’s Adani group would not involve in the plans to expand Kenya’s power network and its main airport, Jommo Kenyata International.
Despite claims of corruption in the procurement process, the Adani group was to invest $1.85 billion in Jommo Kenyata Airport and $736 million in state-owned utility company Ketraco.
Ruto further said his decision was based on ‘new information provided by the investigating agencies and partner countries’, after which it was decided to cancel the deal.
Ruto’s announcement was cheered and loudly applauded by the MPs in the parliament. The deal was sharply criticized by many politicians and ordinary people due to concerns about lack of transparency and value for money.
Earlier, US authorities have said in the chargesheet filed against eight people, including Gautam Adani, that the defendants were preparing to pay a bribe of about $265 million to Indian government officials for a big deal.
