11 insurgents killed in Manipur clash, CRPF officer among dead
Imphal | Desk: 11 suspected insurgents were shot dead in an encounter with the security forces in the Jiribam district of Manipur today.
Manipur’s Imphal valley has been affected by ethnic conflict.
The encounter is said to begin after suspected kuki millitants attacked the CRPF Post located at Jakuradhor and Borobekra Police Station.
The CRPF personnels and police forces than retaliated.
During the encounter, security forces recovered multiple weapons, including four SLRs, three AK-47 rifles, an RPG, and other ammunition from the militants.
Personnel from the CRPF, Assam Rifles, and Manipur Police were stationed at the Borobekra police station, which also has a relief camp for displaced people nearby.
Reports suggest the attackers also planned to target this camp.
Following the clash, militants set fire to three or four houses in Jakuradhor, within the Borobekra police station area.
Tensions have been high in Jiribam since last week after new violence erupted.
Last Thursday, a woman from the Hmar tribe was killed, allegedly by suspected Meitei insurgents, who also set houses on fire in the area. Her husband filed a police report, claiming she was
raped before being killed.
Extremists have been constantly creating terror among the farmers working in the fields following which many of them are avoiding going to their fields.
On Monday morning, a suspected Kuki insurgents opened fire from the hills in Imphal East District, leaving a farmer injured.
