Woman feared to have committed ‘SATI’ after husband death

Raigarh | Correspondent: In Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district, the family of a missing woman suspects she might have committed ‘SATI’ following the death of her husband after the woman’s glasses, slippers, and saree were found near husband’s funeral pyre.

However, the district’s Superintendent of Police, Divyang Patel, states that the case is still under investigation, and no conclusions can be drawn at this stage.

According to the police, Jaidev Gupta, the owner of Jai Tailors in Chitka Kani village, died of cancer at around 60-years of age on Sunday. His last rites were performed around 5:30 that evening. His wife, Gulapi Gupta, was deeply distressed by his death.

She went missing after 11 pm. The family reported that after Gulapi Gupta went missing they searched the area and found her saree, glasses, and slippers near the pyre at the cremation ground outside the village where Jaidev Gupta was cremated. They believe that Gulapi committed suicide by jumping into the pyre.

However, the police are still conducting a forensic investigation and are not ruling out the possibility that she might have gone elsewhere.
