Delhi Registers 52.3 Degrees Celsius Record Temperature

New Delhi | Desk: In Delhi, a weather office noted today’s record-breaking temperature of 52.3 degrees Celsius, the highest ever recorded in the country. At 2:30 PM, the weather station in Delhi’s Mungeshpur marked India’s hottest day in history.

This temperature surpassed expectations by over nine degrees, marking the second consecutive day of unprecedented heat. It soared past the 2002 record of 49.2 degrees Celsius by more than a degree.

The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for health concerns in Delhi, a city with over 30 million inhabitants. The alert highlights a “very high likelihood of developing heat illness and heat stroke in all ages,” stressing the need for “extreme care” for vulnerable individuals.

Although India regularly experiences scorching summer temperatures, scientific studies indicate that climate change is exacerbating heatwaves, making them longer, more frequent, and more severe.

Delhi also witnessed its highest-ever power demand of 8,302 megawatts (MW) amid the heatwave as residents increasingly relied on power-intensive air conditioning, according to electricity department officials.
