SI Suspended After Youth’s Death in Police Station in Chhattisgarh
Balrampur | Correspondent: In the wake of a tragic incident involving the death of a young man by hanging inside the Balrampur police station in Chhattisgarh, both the station in-charge and a constable have been suspended.
The family of the deceased alleges that he was subjected to three days of police brutality, culminating in his death and subsequent hanging.
On September 29, a report was filed regarding the disappearance of a married woman at the Balrampur police station. Her husband, 30-year-old Guru Chand Mandal, a peon in the health department, was reportedly summoned daily for questioning. The family claims that the police physically assaulted the male relatives during this time.
On Thursday, police once again summoned Guru Chand Mandal under the pretense of interrogation. Allegations have surfaced that he was beaten to death and then hanged with a towel in the station’s toilet.
Following the incident, an enraged crowd gathered, blocking the national highway and throwing stones at the police station. In response, law enforcement resorted to lathi charges and fired tear gas to disperse the mob.
Given the gravity of the situation, the Superintendent of Police has ordered the suspension of station in-charge Pramod Rusia and Constable Ajay Yadav for their negligence and for holding the suspect in custody during the interrogation.
