Over 50 medicos resign in protest at RG Kar Medical College

Kolkata | Desk: A mass resignation occurred at RG Kar Medical College, where over 50 Senior Resident Doctors and faculty members resigned in solidarity with the junior doctors’ protest.

The doctors expressed concern for the deteriorating health of their junior colleagues due to an ongoing indefinite hunger strike.

In their resignation letter, the doctors urged the government to engage in negotiations with the protesting doctors and those on hunger strike.

Addressed to the Director of Medical Education and the Ex Officio Secretary of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal, the letter stated that, despite their best efforts to provide quality healthcare services, current conditions have made it increasingly challenging to deliver essential patient care.

“We, the senior doctors of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, are submitting our mass resignation as the government seems oblivious to the deteriorating condition of the doctors on hunger strike. If the situation demands, we may also submit individual resignations,” the letter continued.

The junior doctors began their indefinite hunger strike on Saturday evening (October 5) in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

They alleged that their demands for increased security and improved infrastructure in state-run hospitals and medical colleges have not been addressed by the West Bengal government.
