One more elephant dies in Chhattisgarh
Balrampur | Correspondent: The carcass of an elephant was found in a paddy field in Murka village, Balrampur district, on Monday. While the exact cause of death is unclear, electrocution is suspected. The incident took place in the Manikpur Circle of the Balrampur Forest range.
Forest officials, who had tracked the elephant the day before, arrived at the scene and are awaiting the post-mortem report to confirm the cause of death.
A herd of elephants has recently been roaming through the forests of Ramanujganj and Balrampur, and it’s believed that the deceased elephant had strayed from its group.
Ongoing elephant deaths in Chhattisgarh
This marks the latest in a series of elephant deaths in the state.
On November 1, an elephant died from electrocution in Lormi, Bilaspur district.
On October 26, three elephants were killed by electric shocks in Raigarh district.
In response, the Chhattisgarh High Court took notice and asked the CSPDCL director and energy department secretary to reply.
Elephant calf injured in bomb blast in Gariaband
Meanwhile, a 5-year-old elephant calf was injured in a potash bomb explosion in the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve in Gariaband on Friday.
The calf suffered injuries to its jaw and leg. A herd of 40 elephants has been moving through the area.
The injured calf was found in Risgaon, where a piece of the bomb was also discovered.
Blood stains were found 6 km away from the forest.
The forest team is tracking the calf with drones and a dog squad.
A team of doctors is providing treatment. The department has announced a Rs 10,000 reward for information about those responsible for the bomb.
A police complaint has been filed.
