Korba ponds neglected, residents struggle
Korba | Correspondent: The plans to preserve and restore ponds in the region remain stagnant, with many turning into algae-covered cesspools.
The situation has deteriorated to the extent that water levels in several ponds have dried up, posing significant problems for local residents.
This alarming condition prevails across almost all ponds in urban and suburban areas, including those under the Katghora Municipal Council.
Algae and Weeds Covering Hussain Sagar Pond
Ward 3 of Katghora is home to the Hussain Sagar pond, now choked with algae and weeds.
Layers of silt and lotus leaves have further blanketed the pond, rendering it unusable.
The drying of the pond has disrupted the water needs of nearby residents, impacting daily life and essential activities.
A previous government had proposed a detailed restoration plan for the pond, allocating ₹90 lakh under the District Mineral Fund.
A tender was issued for the project, but the subsequent change in government led to the cancellation of the tender, halting the rejuvenation process.
Pond Continues to Suffer
This year, too, no measures were taken to clear the algae and silt from the pond, which has resulted in water shortages.
Despite being November, the pond has completely dried up, causing inconvenience to residents of Ward 3 and the adjoining Wards 4, 9, and 10, who also depend on the pond for various needs.
Residents Demand Immediate Action
Local residents have urged the district administration to prioritize the pond’s restoration.
They suggest that removing silt and weeds could significantly improve the situation, enabling the pond to meet the needs of the community.
