Death toll from Hurricane Helene climbed to 180

Georgia | Desk: The death toll from Hurricane Helene in the southeastern United States has climbed to 180, with widespread devastation across the region.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris visited the affected areas to assess the damage. Biden toured North and South Carolina by helicopter, surveying the destruction caused by the storm, while Harris visited the hardest-hit areas in Georgia.

Hundreds of people remain missing, and search and rescue teams are struggling to reach remote locations due to the extensive damage.

In response, President Biden has deployed 1,000 active-duty troops to assist the 6,000 National Guard members and 4,800 federal aid workers already providing relief across the six states impacted by the storm.

Efforts to deliver relief supplies are ongoing. Last week, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump also visited Georgia to observe the storm’s aftermath.

Communication with residents in remote areas remains difficult. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced that Biden is scheduled to visit Florida and Georgia on Thursday to continue assessing the situation.

Hurricane Helene made landfall last Thursday as a powerful Category 4 storm, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
