Chhattisgarh alone produces 20% of India’s coal

New Delhi | Desk: Over the past five years, a total of 862.425 million tonnes of coal extracted from Chhattisgarh.

This is about 21 percent of the total coal production within the country.

The report was revealed amid ongoing protests against the new coal blocks.

In this period of five years, India has mined a total of 4116.186 million tonnes of coal.

The provisional figures for the year 2023-24 alone states that 207.255 million tonnes of coal have been extracted in Chhattisgarh.

As per coal ministry figures, 4116.186 million tonnes of coal have been mined within the five years across the country.

In 2019-20, Chhattisgarh extracted 157.745 million tonnes of coal, which escalated to 158.41 million tonnes in the year 2020-21.

However, in 2021-22, it declined to 154.120 million tonnes.

Year 2022-23 witnessed coal extraction above 30 million, leading to 184.895 million.

Chhattisgarh broke all records by extracting a total of 207.255 million tonnes.

Coal extraction increases by 50 percent

Over the last three years, captive and commercial coal production in the state has surged by 50 percent.

In 2021-22, Chhattisgarh produced 21.20 million tonnes of coal, which increased to 27.78 million tonnes in the year 2022-23.

Furthermore, captive and commercial production rose to 31.47 million tonnes.

As of today, Chhattisgarh has 8 captive and commercial mines.

However, the tribals are persistently opposing the new mines in Hasdeo Aranya.
