Destruction of trees in Chhattisgarh amplifies carbon threat

According to a report by Global Forest Watch, in 2010, Chhattisgarh boasted 1.88 million hectares (Mha) of natural forest, covering 17% of its land area.

However, by 2023, the state witnessed a distressing loss of 2.73 thousand hectares (kha) of natural forest, resulting in emissions of 1.58 million tons (Mt) of CO₂.

Primary Forest Decline

From 2001 to 2023, Chhattisgarh experienced a loss of 308 hectares (ha) of humid primary forest, constituting 0.57% of its total tree cover loss.

This decline reflects a concerning 1.5% reduction in the area of humid primary forests within the state.

Tree Cover Loss

Over the same period (2001-2023), Chhattisgarh witnessed the depletion of 53.5 thousand hectares (kha) of tree cover, equivalent to a 2.0% decrease since 2000.

This loss translated into emissions of 25.3 Mt of CO₂, further exacerbating environmental challenges.

Regional Comparison

Despite the concerning trend of tree cover loss, Chhattisgarh exhibited a notable gain of 57.8 kha of tree cover from 2000 to 2020.

This gain, accounting for 3.1% of all tree cover gain in India during the same period, underscores the state’s potential for conservation efforts.
